The Last
Warm Place

The end of the world reached them as silence.

Reader edition V3 Edition · Chapters 1–14 October 2026

V3 · All fourteen chapters published · Three-act serial

A ship full of heat.
A world running out of food.

The nuclear icebreaker Severnaya Zvezda brings survivors to a collapsing coast. Fourteen chapters follow their uncertain evidence, dwindling stores, and the work of becoming a settlement. All fourteen chapters are now out — from the Arctic chart and Svalbard decision, through the crew’s reckoning over a hidden order to return home and landfall at Svalbard, to the meeting that decides who the ship can carry, the winter town that ship and shore build together, the night the ship tries to leave it, the hungry polar night that opens the final act, the longest night on the mountain at the Seed Vault door, the week the ship learns what one man knows, the whiteout that puts the whole town in the dark, and the spring the valley finally answers the world. This is the V3 rewrite: tighter dialogue, Celia Calder's redesign, and every page revised for the read it deserves.

Chapter OneV3 Edition

Silence

The expedition's constant chatter vanishes. Mara Venn, Captain Marek Wrona, and everyone aboard must decide what can be known, what must be done, and who gets told. The math is simple. The silence is not.

Chapter TwoV3 Edition

Reachable

The ship counts every calorie and finds exactly one spare control module — on paper. Then a beacon sounds from Kestrel. Nine are alive, five dead, and the helicopter can only lift five at a time. Wrona sends it anyway. "All nine." The math on the board moves six days closer.

Chapter ThreeV3 Edition

Forty-Three

The chart goes up. Svalbard or nothing — 43 people alive at Borealis Station, 11 days of fuel, one transmitter reply in three months. Wrona and Calder divide the navigation watch. Anton reads the Svalbard frequency. The number on the whiteboard is forty-three.

The Ice Decides

A reactor trip leaves the ship dark in moving ice until the engine room brings the second reactor up by the book. Malik reaches into black water to open a trapped driver’s door, and Wrona finally tells Mara who was in the Tromsø broadcast. Then Svalbard rises on the radar, with far too many lights for forty-three.

Chapter SixV3 Edition

Two Hundred Eighty-One

The signal said forty-three. Longyearbyen holds two hundred eighty-one people who could not get a seat out, and Solveig chose the number that would bring the ship. Mara walks a town running on one generator, a fermenter plant weeks from its first spoonful, and a mountain where Runa guards the world’s last copies of its seed.

Chapter SevenV3 Edition

The Lifeboat Meeting

One table, two commands and 454 lives behind a closed door. Every faction must name who its plan leaves behind, until Rachel hands Mara a switch and the whole valley hears the argument. The town agrees on one reversible trial: run the ship’s cable ashore and bring the lights back.

Chapter EightV3 Edition

The Borrowed City

A climb up the mountain for one breaker, against fallout snow and a hard turnaround time. The power holds, and the town shrinks to fit the warmth. Then a fire takes twelve percent of the dry stores, ship and town build one council to count every store in the valley, and Mae Calder opens one of her father’s crates.

Look Behind You

Metal in the shaft oil forces a choice between the ship’s winter crossing and the town’s power, and the valley votes to stay. Grant has heard a looping relief broadcast from Iceland, and with Oksana he takes the ship out against the council. Behind them Longyearbyen goes black, until Wrona takes the radio on the quay.

The first batch from the fermenter plant tests contaminated, and a hungry town watches Elias dump food he can’t prove is safe. Rations fall and Mae’s book of names grows, until she tells Mara about her father’s crates. The Mountain

On the longest night, Henrik leads thirty hungry people up Platåberget with mining charges to open the Seed Vault, and Runa will not leave its door. Mara climbs up to stand beside her with nothing left but her arithmetic and a bet on a man who hasn’t come forward. Under a soot-red aurora the town decides whether the mountain is opened by force, by mercy, or not at all.

What One Man Knows

Three weeks after the longest night, Ilya has one week of heart medicine left and thirty-four years of the plant in his head. He races to get it all into a handwritten failure atlas, and to say to Daria at last what he never said about Pavel, while the barley in the hangar grows ankle-high under the lamps. When the strokes come, the ship has to learn whether it can run without the one man who knew it.

Chapter ThirteenV3 Edition

Whiteout

In early February, a polar low drives hurricane winds and minus thirty into Longyearbyen. Sea ice shears the shore cable and the whole town goes dark: the hospital, the shelters and Borealis. With four hundred people in the cold and berths for a hundred and eighty, the ship that once sailed away must decide whether to open her doors, and someone has to walk out onto the heaving ice to bring the light back.

Chapter FourteenV3 Edition

Answer

The sun comes back to Longyearbyen, and the first barley comes in at the equinox. With the radio carrying again, Solveig and Mara write the valley a true bulletin: who is living, what is running, what is short, and one new line, that they have seed that grows in the cold. Then Anton transmits and waits to learn whether anyone out there is listening, and whether someone has been calling them all along.
