The Settlement

The polar night closes over Longyearbyen, and ship and town must decide what the valley eats, what it saves, and who keeps the plant running. All five chapters, 10–14, are out now.

Chapter 10 cover: a steel fermenter tank stands open in a dim plant, rubber gloves hanging from its rail above a bucket, while hungry townspeople in winter hats press against the frosted windows 10

Chapter TenV3 Edition

Starter

The first batch from the fermenter plant tests contaminated, and a hungry town watches Elias dump food he can’t prove is safe. Rations fall and Mae’s book of names grows, until she tells Mara about her father’s crates. Mara gives Grant twenty-four hours to surrender them, the council ties over the Vault’s seed, and the deadline runs out on the longest night of the year.

Chapter 11 cover: under a rust-red aurora, a long line of lamp-carrying figures hauls a sled up a snowy mountain road toward the lit doorway of the Seed Vault, where a lone guard stands with a rifle; the ship glows in the harbor far below 11

The Mountain

On the longest night, Henrik leads thirty hungry people up Platåberget with mining charges to open the Seed Vault, and Runa will not leave its door. Mara climbs up to stand beside her with nothing left but her arithmetic and a bet on a man who hasn’t come forward. Under a soot-red aurora the town decides whether the mountain is opened by force, by mercy, or not at all.

What One Man Knows

Three weeks after the longest night, Ilya has one week of heart medicine left and thirty-four years of the plant in his head. He races to get it all into a handwritten failure atlas, and to say to Daria at last what he never said about Pavel, while the barley in the hangar grows ankle-high under the lamps. When the strokes come, the ship has to learn whether it can run without the one man who knew it.

Chapter 13 cover: in a lamp-lit steel doorway of the ship, a dark-haired woman in work coveralls looks back over her shoulder, while beyond the open door a figure in a high-visibility harness pulls on gloves on a snow-blasted quay, cranes and lit buildings fading into the whiteout 13

Chapter ThirteenV3 Edition

Whiteout

In early February, a polar low drives hurricane winds and minus thirty into Longyearbyen. Sea ice shears the shore cable and the whole town goes dark: the hospital, the shelters and Borealis. With four hundred people in the cold and berths for a hundred and eighty, the ship that once sailed away must decide whether to open her doors, and someone has to walk out onto the heaving ice to bring the light back.

Chapter 14 cover: in a lamplit radio room, a gray-haired man in a cardigan with headphones around his neck sits at a log sheet and looks toward the doorway, where a bearded man in a knit cap and a teenage boy holding a notebook stand watching; through the window, snowfields under a dim sky 14

Answer

The sun comes back to Longyearbyen, and the first barley comes in at the equinox. With the radio carrying again, Solveig and Mara write the valley a true bulletin: who is living, what is running, what is short, and one new line, that they have seed that grows in the cold. Then Anton transmits and waits to learn whether anyone out there is listening, and whether someone has been calling them all along.
